We kicked off the second semester with our event Café & Educação, aimed at all parents and guardians. The event was conducted by the three coordinators of the school’s IB programs Maiara Terra, responsible for the PYP; Felipe Pregnolatto, coordinator of the MYP; and Karine Vairo, of the DP.
During the presentation, we talked about the central element of the three programs: the student. Because they are agents of their own learning, the students have a voice, choice, and mastery of their journey. They use their own initiative and interest, take responsibility and direct their learning with a strong sense of identity and self-confidence.
Because Beacon values Student Agency, meaningful learning experiences are offered so that students develop the attributes of the student profile. As IB students, they are encouraged to be questioners, knowers, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, courageous, balanced, reflective people. These attributes will help individuals and groups to have international mindsets and act for positive change in the world.
The participant families were able to understand how each profile is worked on within each program and how it develops as the students grow. In addition, at the end of the event we opened up a space for a pleasant discussion where, in small groups, parents and guardians were able to bring examples and also difficulties on how to exercise each of these profiles. Various suggestions and tips were exchanged between families and speakers, in an important movement of sharing good practices, where everyone could understand that, just like the students, parents and guardians are always learning as well.
