Students of the Optional Activities of Artistic Expressions present the show “Dreams”

By Gabriel Oliveira

In a collaborative process, the students of the Optional Activities of Circus, Theater, Dance, Music, and Photography researched the theme “dreams” and elaborated, with their teachers, a theater play. Divided into two acts, from G4 (3 and 4 years old) to year 1 (Y1), and from year 2 (Y2) to year 2 of High School, each group had the opportunity to perform at the Clube Pinheiros theater. In the transdisciplinary process that brought together students of different ages and teachers, the groups were able to work on skills related to cooperation, creativity, and artistic expression.

The first scene, called “Cloud”, gathered all the students present in the show. In this scene, they composed a sea of white bladders, where each one represented a dream. During the performance, the classes were interspersed during the scenes to promote a dynamic play with varied modalities.

From the reflection on dreams, the students approached the various interpretations of the meaning of the word. In Dance, G5 (4 and 5 years old), inspired by the classic Petrushka repertoire, showed that the toy ballerinas’ dream was to gain human life. Approaching the theme of diversity, G4 (3 and 4 years old) told through dance that the dream of the Giant was to have friends. G6 (5 and 6 years old) relied on the story of the Tooth Fairy, showing the magic that happens when she comes to visit us. From 8th grade (Y8) to 2nd grade (Y11) there was a Street Dance presentation, exploring the world of imagination to which we are transported when we sleep.

The Circus had its first scene set to the soundtrack of the movie “Toy Story”, ” Amigo, estou aqui”. In this scene, G6 (5 and 6 years old) told the story of a boy who dreams of his toys coming to life while he does his homework. The 1st grade (Y1) staged a slumber party where the children, between games and pillows, dreamed of jumping high. “Space Dreams” was the name of the 3rd grade (Y3) scene, which included dreams of aliens and astronauts invading the moon. Still in this world beyond Earth, 2nd grade (Y2) transposed everyday life – waking, walking, sleeping, and dreaming – into the dream of flying through the sky up to the moon. Based on Greek mythology, the 4th (Y4) and 5th (Y5) grades showed the dream of Icarus, who longed to fly beyond the infinite. The 6th to 9th graders (Y6 to Y9) performed the songs “I’m a Dragon” and “Forever, Labrinth”. Closing the circus scenes, some students questioned the limits between reality and dream through the lyrics of “Machine Routine”.

Another narration, “The Beginning of the Dream”, from the 6th grade (Y6), marked the beginning of the play. Inspired by the story of the three little pigs, G5 (grades 4 and 5) recounted a nightmare that the wolf had with the little pigs. With the song “Clube da Esquina #2” by Milton Nascimento, the 6th grade (Y6) narrated the conclusion of the song: dreams don’t grow old. Together, the 1st and 2nd years (Y1 and Y2) questioned themselves and made the audience think about what would happen if birthday wishes came true. Next, the 6th grade (Y6) shared with the audience the recipe for a perfect dream. The Dream Hunters entered the last scene to give the adults back the color of their lost dreams. Marking the end, the narrator of the play returns to bid farewell to the audience and announce the arrival of a new day.

It was with great joy that the students performed the end-of-year performance using a new format, which promoted an appropriate structure for the artistic modalities, thus transporting the spectators to a world of poetry and art!
