Teachers take part in a professional development lecture with a researcher from Stanford University

Beacon welcomed researcher Elvira Souza Lima, who holds degrees in neuroscience,  music, psychology, and anthropology from Sorbonne, and a postdoctoral degree from Stanford University, for a professional development lecture with its educational team.

The lecture “Music, Human Development and Educational Learning” concurred with the movement that the school has been developing over time to sensitize the pedagogical team  to promote art, particularly music, in their classes.

Elvira said that, historically, most schools put music in the background, and that this attitude goes against the latest neuroscience research work that points precisely in the opposite direction. They show how music is one of the languages that most contributes to human development.

In a light-hearted, yet thorough conversation, she established several connections between the value of music and the development of thought, as well as its impact on society.

The teachers were also able to reflect on the IB PYP (Primary Years Program  from the International Baccalaureate Organization), which is part of our Early Childhood Education and Elementary School programs, once again validating the investigative work that is done, thus realizing how much keener questions, curiosity and connections become through music.

Elvira closed the speech stating that “teachers guarantee the continuity of our species”, thus proving through research work and studies that despite all the technological evolution, relationships with other people are vital and should by no means be replaced.

The appreciation of our faculty team’s continuing education is one of the most important pillars of Beacon School.

In order to ensure a consistent and ever-improving pedagogical proposal, the teachers from all grade levels take part in collective professional development meetings on a monthly basis.
