The MYP curriculum

The MYP (Middle Years Programme) is one of the educational programs offered by the International Baccalaureate (IB). Designed for students aged 11 to 16, the MYP is part of an internationally recognized curriculum aimed at developing academic, personal, and social skills, preparing students to face future challenges with confidence and insight.

Currently, there are more than 5,000 IB-certified schools in 156 countries. In Brazil, around 40 schools offer one of the IB programs: PYP, MYP, or DP.

The operation of the MYP is based on fundamental principles that differentiate it from other educational programs. Here are the key aspects of how the MYP operates in practice:

Interdisciplinarity: The MYP encourages interdisciplinary work, allowing students to make connections between various subjects and apply their knowledge in real-life situations.

Global Contexts: The MYP curriculum is built on contextualizing the concepts and content studied, helping students make sense of what they learn. In all grades and subjects, the topics studied follow the following Global Contexts: Identity and Relationships; Orientation in Time and Space; Personal and Cultural Expression; Scientific and Technological Innovation; Globalization and Sustainability; and Justice and Development.

Skill Development: In addition to focusing on academic excellence, MYP students develop critical skills such as research, critical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving. These skills are emphasized in all subjects and learning units.

Authentic Assessment: The MYP uses a variety of assessment methods, including projects, presentations, portfolios, and exams. Assessments are designed to be authentic, reflecting real-world situations and allowing students to demonstrate their understanding and skills in a practical way.

Inquiry-Based Learning: Students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate topics of interest, and seek answers through independent research. This promotes intellectual curiosity and autonomy in learning.

Personal and Social Development: In addition to academic development, the MYP focuses on the personal and social growth of students. The program’s values, such as respect for diversity and the promotion of personal responsibility, are incorporated into everyday activities.

Continuous Assessment and Feedback: MYP teachers provide regular feedback to students to help them improve their performance and understanding. This process creates a dynamic learning environment in which students are encouraged to reflect on their progress and set goals for the future.

Community Involvement: The MYP values community involvement as an integral part of learning. Students are encouraged to participate in social projects and apply their knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems in their communities.

In summary, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate is a dynamic and interdisciplinary educational program that aims not only to impart knowledge but also to develop skills, attitudes, and values that will prepare students to face the challenges of the 21st century. Through an active and engaged learning approach, the MYP empowers students to become critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and conscious global citizens.
